The Monaghan Mill was established by cousins Lewis and Thomas Parker. Designed by Lockwood, Greene, and Co., this textile mill opened in 1901 and had over 700 employees by 1907. The 479,000-square-foot mill is more than a century old. It was a working textile mill as late as 2001, before JPS Apparel Fabrics Corp. closed it.
The historical significance of the mill to the Greenville community landed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
Renovation
In 2004 it was approved by the City of Greenville to renovate the old Monaghan Mill into a 183-unit apartment complex. In 2006 construction began under guidance of developer Upstate Developers LLC. Developers have been taking advantage of the tax breaks that are offered in the redevelopment of historical mills.
The Lofts of Greenville is now a state of the art residential facility, complete with theater room, pool and spa, and with numerous floor plans to choose from.
